For many technicians, correctly interpreting fault codes is a learning process: descriptions are often cryptic and require technical interpretation. Reading and understanding diagnostic protocols is therefore a skill that grows with experience. The more often you work with them, the better you become at getting to the bottom of the real cause.
Case study: BMW iX3 with various fault codes after steering rack replacement
A 2023 BMW iX3 came to us for a remote session in which the steering box needed to be coded, as the car had been repaired after a collision. The steering box was so damaged that the steering could spin infinitely.
After coding the new steering rack, three error codes remained permanently present:
- 030364 : Electronics of touch detection. Missing LIN slave.
- 030410 : Multifunction steering wheel. Missing LIN slave.
- 030490 : Steering wheel module. Missing LIN slave.
What do these error codes mean?
The bodyshop told us that the steering wheel could rotate fully. When you then consider what goes into a steering wheel, it becomes logical why these error codes appear:
- There are buttons on the steering wheel, such as for the radio volume → which belongs to error code 030410.
- The car has ADAS systems, so the steering wheel has touch detection to check if the driver keeps his hands on the wheel → that belongs to fault code 030364.
- The steering wheel electronics themselves transmit information such as steering angle, indicators and wipers → that belongs to fault code 030490.
All these fault codes point to a problem with the LIN circuit. In the control module, there is a kind of winding spring. The LIN cable runs through it. Unrestricted spinning probably damaged or snapped this winding spring.
What does this mean for repairs?
If a pre-scan had been done beforehand, these error codes would have been immediately visible.
The steering wheel electronics cost about €750. In addition:
- the steering wheel will be rebuilt
- the new module will be encoded
- the calculation had to be adjusted
So that costs extra time and money.
